The PCB fined Pakistan allrounder Aamer Jamal over a million rupees (approximately USD 4000) for displaying a slogan supporting former prime minister and cricket captain Imran Khan. Jamal wore a floppy hat with “804” written on it during a training session in Pakistan’s home Test series against England in December last year. The number represents Imran’s prisoner number, as he has been in jail since August 2023, facing multiple long-term sentences for corruption. Imran alleges political motivation behind these charges. His supporters have adopted “804” as a symbol, displaying it during several PSL games last year.

Since Jamal displayed the slogan during training and not on a match day, it did not violate ICC regulations. However, the PCB’s code of conduct mirrors that of the ICC. Clause 2.23 fined Jamal for making inappropriate comments or publicly criticizing the board, its officials, policies, or sensitive topics like politics.
The unusually large fine suggests the PCB is setting an example rather than addressing a minor disciplinary breach. Imran Khan, who served as prime minister until his removal in May 2022, remains at odds with the current government of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. Mohsin Naqvi, the PCB chairman and Pakistan’s interior minister, is a key figure in the current government.
Former PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf initially removed Imran from a celebratory cricket video but reinstated him after public criticism. There was also speculation about renaming the Imran Khan enclosure at Gaddafi Stadium, but it remains under his name. Jamal is among several players fined during the winter for disciplinary and curfew breaches.
