Ashwin joins Sydney Thunder in big BBL signing

R Ashwin has signed with Sydney Thunder for the upcoming Big Bash League season, becoming the first capped Indian men’s cricketer to feature in the tournament. While several India women have previously played in the WBBL, BCCI rules had barred contracted male players from joining overseas leagues. The exception came after Ashwin’s IPL retirement earlier this year, opening the door for him to explore opportunities abroad. He has also entered the ILT20 auction with the highest base price, meaning he will miss the opening three weeks of the BBL due to its clash with the UAE tournament.

Multiple Franchises Showed Interest

Despite his limited availability, multiple BBL franchises pursued Ashwin, with Sydney Thunder, Hobart Hurricanes, Sydney Sixers, and Adelaide Strikers all making pitches. After initial discussions with Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg and league officials, Ashwin chose Thunder. The deal was overseen by Thunder’s general manager Trent Copeland, with head coach Trevor Bayliss and captain David Warner playing key roles in convincing him. “Thunder were crystal clear about how they’d use me,” Ashwin said, praising his alignment with the team’s leadership and Warner’s approach.

Potential Derby Showdown

Ashwin is expected to feature in Thunder’s final four matches, although availability may shift depending on ILT20 results. His presence sets up a thrilling Sydney derby, potentially pitting him and Warner against Sixers stars Steven Smith and Babar Azam.

Squad Balance and Spin Options

From a squad management perspective, Ashwin’s signing is intriguing. Thunder already have overseas players Sam Billings, Lockie Ferguson, and Shadab Khan, along with local spinners Chris Green, Tanveer Sangha, and Tom Andrews. Engie Stadium, their home ground, is considered the most spin-friendly in the league, making Ashwin’s role potentially pivotal.

A Major Coup for Thunder

Copeland hailed Ashwin’s signing as a major boost, noting his leadership and experience would benefit Thunder’s younger players. The Indian star will earn a high per-game salary that fits within the team’s cap, aided by a marketing deal with Cricket Australia. Ashwin becomes Thunder’s 17th contracted player, one short of the squad limit. His arrival marks not just a high-profile acquisition for the club but also a landmark moment for the BBL and Indian cricket’s global participation.
