Jacob Fearnley marked a significant milestone in his budding career, securing an emphatic 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) victory over Nick Kyrgios in the first round of the Australian Open. The 23-year-old Brit, playing his first overseas Grand Slam match, showcased remarkable composure as he defeated the former Wimbledon finalist on a packed John Cain Arena.
Fearnley’s clinical performance contrasted sharply with Kyrgios’ struggles. The Australian, returning to Melbourne Park for the first time since 2022, battled visible fitness issues stemming from an abdominal injury suffered earlier this month at the Brisbane International. Despite receiving a wildcard to compete, Kyrgios appeared far from his best, frequently clutching his abdominal area and requiring medical attention during the match.
Reflecting on the win, Fearnley said:
“All things considered, I think it has to be the best match I’ve ever played.”
The home crowd, known for fervently backing Kyrgios, gradually quieted as Fearnley took control of the match. While Kyrgios mounted a spirited comeback in the third set, even breaking Fearnley’s serve at one point, the Scot held firm and dominated the tie-break to seal his spot in the second round.
Fearnley’s rapid ascent into the top 100 last year has been nothing short of meteoric, and his ability to stay focused amidst the distractions of Kyrgios’ injury only highlighted his mental fortitude.
Kyrgios, who once ranked as high as world number 13, had hoped to reignite his career in front of his home fans but acknowledged the challenges posed by his physical condition.
Fearnley’s victory not only extends his impressive form but also marks a memorable start to his 2024 campaign, as he eyes further progress in Melbourne.
