BCCI’s New Rules to Limit Travel for Anushka Sharma and Indian Cricketers’ Wives

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced new guidelines for Team India’s overseas tours following their disappointing performance in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India suffered a 1-3 series defeat, losing the trophy for the first time in a decade and failing to qualify for the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final.

What Prompted the BCCI’s New Guidelines?

The loss against Australia was a major blow. Despite starting the series with a commanding 295-run victory in Perth, India lost three of the next four Tests. Australia secured a spot in the WTC final, while India was eliminated. This poor outcome raised concerns within the BCCI about the team’s preparation and focus during tours. At the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting, attended by Senior Selection Committee Chairman Ajit Agarkar, captain Rohit Sharma, and head coach Gautam Gambhir, new measures were proposed to address these issues.

New Rules for Players and Families

The BCCI has decided to limit the time cricketers’ families can stay with them on overseas tours. Under the new rules, players’ wives and families can only stay for two weeks during a 45-day tour. Previously, family members could accompany players throughout the tour, which the board believes may have affected focus. Notably, Anushka Sharma (wife of Virat Kohli) and Athiya Shetty (wife of KL Rahul) were present for the entire Border-Gavaskar series, a practice now prohibited.

Additionally, all players must travel together on the team bus to foster unity and improve coordination. This rule ends the recent practice of senior players, such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, traveling separately.
