The Netherlands secured the gold medal in men’s hockey at the Paris Olympics 2024 by defeating Germany 3-1 in a shootout following a 1-1 draw. Duco Telgenkamp sealed the victory with the final penalty shot, beating German goalkeeper Jean-Paul Danneberg. This win marks the Dutch men’s third Olympic gold in hockey and their 10th overall, with their last gold coming at the 2000 Sydney Games.

The match, held at Yves-du-Manoir Stadium, was a tightly contested defensive battle, with Germany holding 57% possession but the Netherlands doubling their attacking circle penetrations. The game remained scoreless until the 46th minute when Dutch captain Thierry Brinkman redirected a shot from Koen Bijen to open the scoring. Germany responded quickly, with Thies Prinz leveling the match in the 49th minute off a penalty corner.
As the game moved to a shootout, both goalkeepers excelled under pressure. Danneberg and his Dutch counterpart, Pirmin Blaak, made several crucial saves to keep the score tied at 0-0. Brinkman broke the deadlock with a spinning backhand, followed by Thijs van Dam’s goal that put the Dutch ahead. Although Justus Weigand managed to score for Germany, Telgenkamp’s decisive shot clinched the gold for the Netherlands.
Tensions flared post-match when Telgenkamp jeered at Danneberg, leading to a brief altercation as Germany’s Niklas Wellen rushed over to defend his teammate. Despite the heated moments, the Dutch team celebrated their historic victory, marking a triumphant return to the top of Olympic men’s hockey.
