Bartonietz, who took over from javelin legend Uwe Hohn, had a full-time contract until the Paris 2024 Olympics. However, at 75, he has suggested that it’s time for Neeraj Chopra to find a new coach, citing age and family commitments for his unavailability. “He told us that he had done the best he could and that it was time for Neeraj to work with someone who could elevate his game further,” said Athletics Federation of India (AFI) president Adille Sumariwalla.

Under Bartonietz’s guidance, Neeraj Chopra achieved remarkable success, winning Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020, a Diamond League title in 2022, and gold medals at both the World Championships and Asian Games in 2023. However, the 2024 season has been challenging, with Chopra finishing second in several major events, including the Doha Diamond League and the Paris Olympics, where he was outperformed by Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem.

Neeraj Chopra acknowledged the need for change, stating, “We see many times that we are following the same plan. I must bring in some change.” He emphasized the importance of altering his workout and mindset to achieve different results, believing that these adjustments could lead to improved performance.
