Sakurai Tsugumi of Japan secured gold in the women’s freestyle 57kg wrestling at Paris 2024 with a dominant 6-0 victory over Moldova’s Anastasia Nichita in the final. Reflecting on her win, Sakurai shared her determination: “I knew I would face tough competitors from many countries, but I kept my focus on winning the gold medal. The best moment was when I won, as I could finally put all my training into practice.”

Nichita, who won gold at the European Championships last year, expressed her disappointment at not achieving the top spot. “So many people came to support me today, and I’m really grateful for that,” she said. “I’m sorry I didn’t win the gold medal, but next time, I’ll give it my best to achieve that dream. This silver medal represents the struggles I’ve endured, but I’ll keep striving for gold.”
Earlier in the day, the bronze medals were decided. Helen Louise Maroulis of the United States and Hong Kexin of the People’s Republic of China secured their places on the podium by defeating Canada’s Hannah Fay Taylor and Brazil’s Giullia Penalber, respectively.
Maroulis and Hong both showcased impressive skill and resilience to earn their bronze medals, contributing to a highly competitive day in women’s freestyle wrestling at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
