India’s Pravin Jadhav was knocked out in the first round of the men’s individual archery event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, marking the end of the country’s challenge in the men’s division. On Wednesday, Kao Wenchao of the People’s Republic of China defeated Jadhav 6-0, with set scores of 29-28, 30-29, and 28-27. The Indian archer, seeded 39th, could not overcome the 26th-seeded Wenchao.

In the individual archery event at the Olympics, competitors contest a best-of-five sets format. Each archer shoots three arrows per set, with the higher total earning two points.

Jadhav’s early exit concludes India’s participation in the men’s individual archery events for Paris 2024. Earlier in the tournament, the first round eliminated four-time Olympian Tarundeep Rai, and a narrow defeat in the second round befell Dhiraj Bommadevara. Additionally, the men’s team was also unable to progress past the quarter-finals.

Despite the setbacks, Dhiraj Bommadevara, alongside Ankita Bhakat, will have one last opportunity for a medal in the mixed team event, which begins on Friday.

In the women’s archery events, Deepika Kumari and Bhajan Kaur have advanced to the pre-quarterfinals of the individual competition, while the first round eliminated Ankita Bhakat. Like their male counterparts, the quarter-finals knocked out the women’s team.

India’s archers will look to close out their campaign with a strong showing in the mixed team event, hoping to secure a medal as the Paris 2024 Olympics continue.
