Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have become beloved figures among fans for their transformative impact on the club. However, their deep connection with the team is reciprocated.
After enduring 15 years in the National League, Wrexham celebrated back-to-back promotions and will compete in League 1 next season. The Hollywood duo assembled a League 1-caliber squad, aiming for another straight promotion. Despite a rough start last season, losing 5-3 to Milton Keynes Dons at home. Wrexham quickly regained form and were in the automatic promotion spots midway through the season.
However, a slump saw Wrexham lose three consecutive games and win just two out of nine, falling out of the promotion places. For Reynolds, this period was particularly challenging. “I’m not a football expert, so what the —- do I know?” he remarked on the latest episode of “Welcome to Wrexham,” reflecting on the poor run. “But I can’t seem to figure it out, no one can figure out what’s going wrong. Our away form has been a little trashy but god dammit, I love this club with every cell of my body. It’s like I die when they lose.”
Despite their struggles, Wrexham remained in a playoff position. Reynolds and McElhenney realized the need to take action to lift the team’s spirits. “We just have to do better, and I think that Rob and I need to show our face, go to the town, go to the Racecourse and just be there,” Reynolds emphasized, acknowledging that their presence could make a difference.

Reynolds was tied up with filming commitments for the new Deadpool movie, so McElhenney traveled to Wrexham alone. “It just felt like the right time to visit Wrexham and spend some time with the team and the people. I love Wrexham, I consider it my second home,” McElhenney shared. “I just think it’s one of those places that draws you back and always welcomes you back. It felt like the morale had dropped at that point and I was really concerned. So we wanted to go down there and show our support. As co-chairman of a football club. It’s good to show your face and give some support in person, especially when they’re struggling a bit.”
McElhenney’s visit coincided with a crucial turnaround. Wrexham thrashed Accrington Stanley 4-0 at home, sparking a remarkable run. The team dropped just eight points in their final 12 games, winning nine, and securing automatic promotion to achieve their pre-season goal.
Reynolds and McElhenney’s dedication and emotional investment in Wrexham have not only won over fans but also played a pivotal role in the club’s recent successes.
