Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup remain uncertain as the country waits for a decision from FIFA regarding a dispute with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo). The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has filed a formal complaint, claiming that DR Congo used ineligible players during a decisive African qualifying playoff match.
The controversy began after Nigeria lost to DR Congo in the African playoff final in November 2025. The match ended in a dramatic penalty shootout, which allowed DR Congo to advance toward the intercontinental playoffs. However, Nigerian officials later raised concerns about the eligibility of several Congolese players who took part in the match.
According to the NFF, some of these players may not have met the nationality requirements needed to represent DR Congo. The federation claims that certain footballers hold dual nationality and may not have properly completed the process required under Congolese law and FIFA regulations. Among the players mentioned in reports are footballers who previously represented European nations at youth level.
The Nigerian federation has asked FIFA to review the case and potentially overturn the result of the match. If FIFA rules in Nigeria’s favor, DR Congo could face sanctions, and Nigeria might be reinstated in the qualification pathway for the World Cup.
Meanwhile, FIFA has confirmed that the matter is under review, but no final decision has been announced yet. The delay has created uncertainty among fans and football officials in Nigeria, especially as preparations for the expanded 2026 World Cup continue.
The upcoming tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will be the first World Cup to feature 48 teams, making qualification even more competitive. Until FIFA releases its ruling, Nigeria’s chances of participating in the global event remain unclear.
