⚽ Against All Odds: Honey Thaljieh on How Football Can Change the Narrative of Palestinians 🌍✨

Honey Thaljieh’s journey is nothing short of inspirational. From a seven-year-old girl watching boys play football on the streets of occupied Bethlehem to becoming the first captain of the Palestine women’s national team, her story is a testament to the power of sport in breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes. 🚀💪🏽

It all began when she was invited to join a game one day, and her skills immediately caught attention. That moment sparked a lifelong love affair with the ‘beautiful game’, leading her to co-found the Palestine women’s team and pave the way for Arab women in sports. 👏⚽

🗣️ “I grew up in a world where I only wanted an opportunity, and football gave it to me,” Thaljieh tells TOI.

🌍 From Footballer to Global Advocate

Today, Thaljieh’s influence extends far beyond the pitch. For the past 13 years, she has been part of FIFA’s public relations team, using her platform to champion equality, inclusion, and social development. 🌱🤝

She is currently on her third visit to India, engaging with young minds and inspiring future generations. During her visit, she:

📌 Delivered a talk at Pillai College for International Women’s Day 🎤👩🏽‍🎓

📌 Gave a lecture at the 6th Pillai FIFA CIES Programme in Sports Management 📚⚽

*📌 Played football with girls from Slum Soccer, an NGO helping underprivileged youth 🏆👧🏽

🗣️ “Everywhere I go, it reminds me of my own story. I want to be the influence I never had as a young Palestinian girl.”

Thaljieh believes that access to sports is a fundamental right and continues to fight for a world where opportunities are available for everyone, regardless of background, nationality, or religion. 🌏⚖️

🇵🇸 Football as a Tool for Change

Thaljieh’s mission is deeply connected to the ongoing struggles of the Palestinian people. Reflecting on the conflict in Gaza and the West Bank, she highlights how football can serve as a symbol of hope and resistance. 🕊️✊🏽

🗣️ “The situation in Palestine is not new—it has been a long fight for equality, justice, and freedom since 1948. I come from a land that should be about peace, yet it is filled with conflict.”

While football may not bring immediate change, she strongly believes in its power to reshape perceptions and empower individuals.

🗣️ “Football can change the narrative of Palestinians. It put us on the map. It won’t bring freedom overnight, but it gives us a voice to speak about justice and equality for all.”

Her journey proves that sport is more than just a game—it is a vehicle for change, empowerment, and unity.
