The organizers have postponed the highly anticipated boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul. Tyson experienced a medical incident on Sunday while boarding a plane in Miami, feeling “nauseous and dizzy due to an ulcer flare-up.” Although he announced on Monday that he felt “100 percent” better, the incident has affected his ability to train adequately.
On Friday, Netflix, the streaming provider for the event, announced that they will postpone the bout, originally scheduled for July-20. They made the decision to ensure that Tyson can fully recover and train without limitations. Providing both fighters with equal preparation time for the match.
“Unfortunately, Jake Paul and Mike Tyson will not face off on July 20 as planned. Tyson’s recent ulcer flare-up has limited his ability to train fully for the next few weeks. Netflix stated that they will reschedule the fight for a date later this year.
Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), Paul’s promotion company, echoed this sentiment in their press release, including quotes from both Tyson and Paul. MVP emphasized that the health and well-being of the athletes are the top priority.
“My body is in better overall shape than it has been since the 1990s and I will be back to my full training schedule soon,” Tyson said. “Jake Paul, this may have bought you some time, but in the end, you will still be knocked out and out of boxing for good. I appreciate everyone’s patience and can’t wait to deliver an unforgettable performance later this year.”
Paul supported the postponement, stating, “I fully support postponing the event so Mike Tyson has no excuses come fight night. My fans know I don’t want to face Iron Mike at anything but his best. But let there be no mistake – when he steps into the ring with me, I will be ready to claim my W with a sensational finish. Paul vs. Tyson will be one for the ages, and I promise to bring my best for this once-in-a-lifetime matchup.”
Tyson, 57, has not competed since an exhibition bout against Roy Jones Jr. in November 2020. Paul recently knocked out Ryan Bourland in March, moving to a professional boxing record of 9-1.
The organizers expect to announce a new date for the Tyson vs. Paul fight by June 7.
