Barcelona will aim to enter the third international break of the season on a high when they face Real Sociedad on Sunday. However, coach Hansi Flick will be forced to make adjustments to his lineup, as the team will be without the services of Pau Cubarsi.
Cubarsi, who suffered a significant blow to the face this week and required ten stitches on his cheek, had hoped to feature against Sociedad, but the club decided against risking further injury. Barcelona’s defensive options for the match will feel the impact of his absence.
Koundé Set for a Return to Right-Back?
With several key defenders already sidelined—Ronald Araujo, Andreas Christensen, and Eric Garcia all unavailable—Flick has limited options for his defensive setup. The coach could turn to Jules Koundé, who has primarily played as a centre-back for Barcelona, but might revert to his more familiar role at right-back in Cubarsi’s absence.

Koundé, who has been a staple in the centre of defence for most of his time at Barcelona, has not featured at right-back since January 2024. His return to that position would shift his role, but the team may need this change given the mounting defensive injuries.
Flick also has the option of deploying Sergi Dominguez as a centre-back partner to Inigo Martínez. However, this choice carries a degree of risk due to Dominguez’s relative lack of experience at the highest level. Koundé, with his solid understanding of Barcelona’s defensive system, might offer a more reliable solution.
If Koundé moves to centre-back, Hector Fort could have the opportunity to start at right-back. Fort impressed in the Catalan derby last weekend and, given his recent performances, is more than capable of handling the challenge against Real Sociedad.
As Barcelona look to extend their unbeaten run, Flick will need to find the right balance in his defensive line, making crucial decisions to ensure they remain solid at the back while maintaining their attacking threat.
