Werder Bremen Slams Elon Musk, Leaves X Over Hate Speech and Conspiracy Theories

Werder Bremen has announced its departure from X, formerly known as Twitter, with a scathing statement condemning Elon Musk for his handling of the platform. The Bundesliga club’s decision follows a growing trend of high-profile users leaving X for alternative social media platforms like Bluesky, Threads, and Mastodon.

Since Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in October 2022, the platform has undergone significant changes, including a rebranding to X and a reduction in staff and features. Many users, including celebrities and organizations, have expressed concerns over Musk’s approach to content moderation, with accusations that hate speech, conspiracy theories, and extremist content have flourished under his leadership.

In a statement released after their annual general meeting on Monday, Werder Bremen’s CEO Klaus Filbry sharply criticized Musk, accusing him of enabling a rise in harmful content. The statement read: “Since Elon Musk took over the platform, hate speech, hostility towards minorities, right-wing extremism, and conspiracy theories have been allowed to spread unchecked, all under the guise of freedom of speech.”

Filbry went on to allege that Musk’s personal posts, including transphobic and anti-Semitic comments, have contributed to the radicalization of the platform, which has seen a decline in moderation and transparency. The statement further accused Musk of using X as a political tool, referencing his involvement in political movements such as those linked to Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency.

In response to what they described as the platform’s “radicalization,” Werder Bremen, which has more than 600,000 followers on X, announced it would be leaving the platform immediately. The club urged its supporters to follow them on Bluesky, a social media network that has seen a surge in users in recent weeks.

The statement continued, “SV Werder Bremen is taking a clear stance against hatred, hate speech, discrimination, and exclusion. We proudly stand for diversity, freedom, and democracy, as well as solidarity and cohesion in society. With the recent radicalization of the platform, they have crossed a line, and we can no longer remain.”

Werder Bremen, currently eighth in the Bundesliga with four wins from 10 matches this season, is one of Germany’s most historic football clubs, having won the Bundesliga four times. They made history in May 2022 by becoming the first football club to join Common Goal, a social initiative where participants donate 1% of their income to charity. The club also contributes 1% of its ticketing and sponsorship revenue to the initiative.

As Werder Bremen steps away from X, their bold stance against the platform’s current direction highlights the growing concerns over the impact of Musk’s leadership on online discourse.
