Cristiano Ronaldo achieved yet another historic milestone by scoring his 900th career goal during Portugal’s UEFA Nations League match against Croatia on Thursday. The Al-Nassr forward, known for his relentless pursuit of excellence, couldn’t hold back his emotions as he netted this remarkable goal late in the first half.
Portugal entered the break with a 2-1 lead, thanks to an earlier goal by Diogo Dalot, although an own goal from the Manchester United defender briefly leveled the score. Ronaldo’s goal, his 131st for the national team, came after a challenging Euro 2024 campaign, where he notably had a penalty saved against Slovenia. Despite the recent frustration, the 39-year-old striker delivered when it mattered most, perfectly timing his run to meet a Nuno Mendes cross from the left and slotting the ball past Croatia’s goalkeeper, Dominik Livakovic.
As Ronaldo celebrated near the corner flag, his emotions overwhelmed him, and he broke down in tears, surrounded by his jubilant teammates. This moment encapsulated the passion and dedication that have defined his legendary career.
In the build-up to the match, Ronaldo had openly discussed his ambitions, setting his sights on an even greater milestone—1,000 career goals. Speaking to former Manchester United teammate Rio Ferdinand, he confidently stated, “Soon I will do 900, and after that, it will be 1,000.” When asked how old he might be when he reaches that target, Ronaldo, ever focused on his fitness, replied, “41, I don’t know. If I don’t have injuries, that is most important, I want that. My challenge is to reach 1,000 goals, with one difference – all the goals that I score will have video. So I can prove that.”
Ferdinand playfully suggested that Ronaldo’s comment was a subtle jab at football legend Pelé, who famously claimed to have scored more than 1,000 goals in his career, a figure often debated due to the inclusion of unofficial matches. Ferdinand quipped, “You’re a b******. You’re talking about [Alfredo] Di Stefano, you’re talking about Pelé, you’re talking about Eusebio.”

Ronaldo already holds the record for the most international goals scored by a male footballer, with his latest goal against Croatia further cementing his legacy. He is one of only three players, alongside Lionel Messi and Ali Daei, to have scored over 100 international goals.
At the club level, Ronaldo’s staggering tally includes 450 goals scored during his nine-year tenure at Real Madrid, where he averaged more than a goal per game. His career also boasts 145 goals across two spells with Manchester United, 101 goals during his time with Juventus, five goals with his boyhood club Sporting CP, and 68 goals for his current club, Al-Nassr.
In a recent interview with NOW, Ronaldo hinted at his plans for the future, expressing his contentment in Saudi Arabia. “I don’t know if I will retire soon, in two or three years… but probably I will retire here at Al-Nassr,” he shared. “I’m very happy at this club, I feel good in this country too. I’m happy to play in Saudi Arabia and I want to continue.”
Ronaldo’s 900th goal is a testament to his enduring brilliance and unyielding drive. As he continues to set records and push boundaries, fans around the world eagerly await the next chapter in his extraordinary career.
