Brazilian superstar Neymar has signed a six-month contract with Santos, the club where he began his illustrious career. The move marks an emotional homecoming for the 32-year-old forward, who was unveiled to a raucous reception at Estadio Urbano Caldeira on Friday.
In a heartfelt moment captured on video that quickly went viral, Neymar was seen in tears during his presentation. Santos vice-president Fernando Bonavides explained the club’s long-term hopes:
“The contract is for six months initially, but obviously we will do all we can to have him remain with us. What we are hoping is that he stays until next year’s World Cup.”
Neymar’s return to Santos comes after a tumultuous period. The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star had a brief stint with Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal, appearing only seven times despite a reported annual salary of around $104 million.
He joined Al Hilal in August 2023, following in the footsteps of other global superstars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. However, Neymar’s time in the Gulf was cut short when he ruptured a cruciate ligament in his left knee during a 2026 World Cup qualifier for Brazil, sidelining him for a year. Subsequent hamstring and knee injuries further hampered his efforts to return to peak form.
At his Santos unveiling ceremony, Neymar was celebrated not only by the club’s passionate supporters but also by local music stars, whose concerts added to the festive atmosphere of this long-awaited reunion with his boyhood club.
Neymar, Brazil’s all-time top scorer, now embarks on a new chapter at Santos, with fans and the club alike hoping that this return will pave the way for a lasting comeback on both the domestic and international stages.
