Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has signed a contract extension, keeping him at the club until June 2026. The decision reflects strong backing from minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe following a season that initially raised doubts about Ten Hag’s future.
After a disappointing Premier League campaign where United finished eighth, the team rebounded by winning the FA Cup final against Manchester City, securing their second trophy in two years under Ten Hag and securing Europa League qualification. This achievement prompted the club to trigger a one-year extension from his original contract, which was set to expire in 2025.
The extension signifies Ratcliffe’s confidence in Ten Hag, who underwent a comprehensive evaluation of United’s football operations aimed at enhancing performance. Despite considering potential replacements such as Thomas Tuchel, the club opted to retain Ten Hag, who is now focusing on refreshing his coaching staff. Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy and Dutch coach René Hake are among those under consideration.
“Ten Hag expressed his pleasure at reaching an agreement with the club to continue working together. “Looking back at the past two years, we can reflect with pride on two trophies and significant progress since I joined. However, there is still hard work ahead to meet the high standards expected of Manchester United, including challenging for domestic and European titles.”
The new football leadership team at Old Trafford, including sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox, underscores the club’s commitment to achieving sustained success under Ten Hag’s guidance.
“With two trophies in the past two seasons, Erik has proven himself as one of Europe’s consistently successful coaches,” commented Ashworth. “While we acknowledge areas for improvement from last season, it is clear that Erik is the best partner to drive up standards and achieve our ambitions. We look forward to working closely with him to realize our shared goals for Manchester United.”
This extension marks a pivotal moment as United prepares to build on recent successes under Ten Hag’s leadership, aiming for continued competitiveness both domestically and in European competitions.
