Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket through a social media post on Saturday morning. Dhawan’s last competitive appearance was in April 2024, where he captained the Punjab Kings in the IPL. Over his career, he scored 24 centuries (17 in ODIs and seven in Tests) across 269 international matches. In a video message, Shikhar Dhawan reflected, “I am leaving with peace in my heart that I played for so long for India.”

Debuting for India in 2010, Shikhar Dhawan retires as one of only eight ODI players to score over 5000 runs with a 40-plus average and a 90-plus strike rate. His ODI career includes 6793 runs in 167 matches, averaging 44.11 with a strike rate of 91.35. Notably, he debuted in Tests with a rapid 85-ball century against Australia in 2013, the fastest by a debutant, where he scored 187 runs.
Dhawan’s peak came in 2013, scoring 1162 runs in 26 ODIs, with a standout performance in the Champions Trophy, where he was the top scorer with 363 runs, including two centuries. This tournament also marked the beginning of a prolific opening partnership with Rohit Sharma. Shikhar Dhawan was India’s leading scorer in subsequent multi-team ODI tournaments until 2018.
