IND vs ENG: Second Test Sees England Spinner Jack Leach Sidelined with Knee Injury

In a significant setback for England’s cricket team, experienced spinner Jack Leach will miss the second Test against India due to a knee injury, as confirmed by skipper Ben Stokes. The 32-year-old, England’s most seasoned spinner on the tour, sustained the injury during the first Test in Hyderabad. Despite the setback, Leach managed to bowl 10 crucial overs in the second innings, securing the wicket of Shreyas Iyer for 13 runs.

Jack Leach’s absence raises questions about his participation in the upcoming Test in Visakhapatnam from February 2-6. Stokes expressed hope that the injury would not keep Leach out for an extended period in the series. The void left by Leach opens up an opportunity for his Somerset teammate, 20-year-old spinner Shoaib Bashir, to make his international debut as a potential replacement. Bashir, who missed the opening Test due to a visa delay, has now resolved the issue.

Stokes praised Bashir, stating that his performance in training fulfilled all the criteria the team was looking for in their spin department. Meanwhile, debutant Tom Hartley played a pivotal role in the first Test, claiming impressive figures of 7-62. His performance marked the fourth-best by a debutant visiting bowler in India. The Test witnessed a dramatic turnaround as India collapsed from 42-0 to all out for 202 runs in 69.2 overs, following England’s total of 246.
