Ongoing stadium renovations in Pakistan have led the PCB to consider moving one of the Tests in the series against England offshore. Abu Dhabi, a former “home” venue for Pakistan during their decade-long exile, is being considered as a backup. Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium and Karachi’s National Stadium are undergoing major upgrades, and Rawalpindi Stadium, which hosted the two Bangladesh Tests, is also under renovation. These updates aim to prepare the venues for the 2025 Champions Trophy, Pakistan’s first ICC event since 1996.
Multan and Rawalpindi are the only two venues currently capable of hosting Tests. However, there are concerns that hosting multiple matches in Rawalpindi could delay the stadium’s renovation, potentially affecting the Champions Trophy. Additionally, a Shanghai Corporation Organisation (SCO) meeting in Islamabad from October 15-16 could rule out Rawalpindi as a venue for the second Test due to security and accommodation concerns.
The PCB is also considering scheduling consecutive Tests in Multan or moving one Test to Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi is hosting Ireland’s white-ball series against South Africa until October 7, which clashes with the first Test, scheduled to begin the same day. This conflict could affect the Test unless the PCB adjusts the series dates.
With the arrival of England fans and logistical challenges in mind, the PCB faces pressure to finalize venues quickly. England’s head coach Brendon McCullum emphasized the importance of knowing the venues in advance to select the appropriate squad.
