New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson showcased exceptional batting skills on the opening day of the first Test against South Africa at Bay Oval. Ravindra scored his maiden Test century, remaining unbeaten at 118, while Kane Williamson, the former captain, secured his 30th Test century, finishing the day with an unbeaten 112.
Opting to bowl after winning the toss, South Africa made an early breakthrough with debutant Tshepo Moreki dismissing Devon Conway in the second over. Another debutant, Dane Paterson, claimed the wicket of Tom Blundell for 20.
However, Ravindra and Williamson formed a resilient partnership, frustrating the South African bowlers. The duo’s unbroken stand of 219 propelled New Zealand to a total of 258 for two at the end of the day’s play.
Kane Williamson, known for his masterful batting, overcame a moment of frustration in his innings.
Ruan de Swardt was unfortunate not to dismiss him, as Williamson’s attempted slog over covers did not result in a catch. Williamson eventually reached his 34th half-century and converted it into a century with 13 boundaries.
Ravindra, named ICC Emerging Player of the Year, had a significant innings, overcoming a dropped catch when he was on 80. The 24-year-old, playing his first Test in two years, reached his maiden Test century, finishing the day with an impressive 118 not out.
The Proteas fielded an unfamiliar lineup due to several debutants and players prioritizing the Twenty20 competition (SA20) for financial reasons. Despite the challenges, the South African bowlers showed promise in the first two sessions.
At the end of the day, South African seamer Duanne Olivier acknowledged the batting display by Williamson and Ravindra, stating, “Fair play to Kane and Ravindra, they played well.” He expressed optimism for the remaining days of the Test, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of the game.
The second Test between New Zealand and South Africa is scheduled to take place in Hamilton from February 13.
