Gautam Gambhir has officially begun his coaching debut as the Indian cricket team arrives in Sri Lanka for the T20I and ODI series. The tour, which kicks off on July 27, will feature a three-match T20I series and marks the start of a new era under Gambhir for the Men in Blue.
Sony Sports Network has shared a video on their official X handle showing Gambhir making his first appearance as head coach. In the video, he walks down the stairs from the Pallekele International Stadium to the ground, displaying readiness and determination for his new high-profile role.
For the T20Is, Suryakumar Yadav will lead the team, following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from T20Is. Sharma will, however, play in the ODIs, leading a nearly full-strength side with Virat Kohli, who will also join the three ODIs.
In another significant development, Shubman Gill has been appointed vice-captain for both white-ball formats. On the other hand, Sri Lanka will see a change in captaincy with Charith Asalanka taking over for the T20I series. Wanindu Hasaranga has stepped down from the role following a disappointing 2024 T20 World Cup campaign in the USA and the Caribbean.
This series will be crucial for both teams, with key players and new leadership roles setting the stage for an exciting competition.
