The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have announced the inclusion of Mark Wood in the squad for the remaining Test series against West Indies, following James Anderson’s retirement. Initially left out of the squad, Mark Wood returns due to backing from team management, competing with Gus Atkinson, who impressed with 12 wickets on his debut.

ECB Managing Director Rob Key clarified Wood’s absence from the first Test, attributing it to his transition from T20 cricket post the T20 World Cup. Key emphasized the challenge of adjusting to Test cricket after a T20-heavy season, noting the strategic decision to rest Wood initially with plans to reintegrate him for subsequent Tests.
While Atkinson’s debut performance secured his place in the summer XI, England’s batting showed promise with Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, and debutant Jamie Smith contributing significantly in the first Test at Lord’s. The squad for the second Test includes Ben Stokes, Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Dan Lawrence, Dillon Pennington, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Chris Woakes, and Mark Wood.
Wood’s return adds depth to England’s pace attack, providing flexibility alongside stalwarts like Stokes and Woakes, with the potential inclusion of Pennington depending on team strategy. As the series progresses, England aims to balance experience and form to maintain momentum against West Indies.
