James Vince Chooses PSL Over County Cricket, Steps Down as Captain

James Vince has chosen to prioritize his commitments to the Karachi Kings in the PSL 2025 season over Hampshire’s red-ball campaign. The 33-year-old has stepped down as Hampshire’s County captain after nine years at the helm but will continue to lead the Hampshire Hawks in the 2025 Vitality T20 Blast.

Vince was retained by Karachi Kings in the PSL 2025 draft under the ‘Diamond’ category. The decision aligns with the ECB’s revised policy on No-Objection Certificates (NOCs), which restricts white-ball specialists from playing in overseas leagues, except the IPL, during the English domestic season. By focusing solely on Hampshire’s T20 commitments, Vince is now eligible to represent the Karachi Kings.

Hampshire confirmed on January 15 that Vince has signed a revised contract, allowing him to balance his duties with the club’s T20 side and the PSL franchise. Vince is currently in the UAE, representing the Gulf Giants in the ILT20 2025 season. He moved to Dubai with his family after unexplained attacks on his England home during the 2024 County season, a factor that influenced his recent career decisions.

A seasoned right-handed batter, Vince has played 13 Tests, 25 ODIs, and 17 T20Is for England. However, his last international appearance came in March 2023 against Bangladesh. Despite stepping away from first-class cricket, Vince remains a key player in T20 leagues worldwide, reflecting his adaptability and growing preference for white-ball formats.

This shift marks a new chapter for the Hampshire veteran, highlighting his commitment to global T20 competitions while maintaining a connection with his long-time county team.
