Moises Henriques Ends First-Class Career, Focuses on Shorter Formats

Moises Henriques, the New South Wales (NSW) captain, has announced his retirement from first-class cricket during the 2024-25 season. Henriques, 38, who played four Tests for Australia, will continue representing NSW in the One-Day Cup and has one season left with the Sydney Sixers, where he also serves as captain.

Moises Henriques Ends First-Class Career, Focuses on Shorter FormatsHenriques had not played for NSW in the Sheffield Shield since November 2024, with Jack Edwards taking over and leading the side to a fourth-place finish. Henriques confirmed that he had made the decision before Christmas, stating that while his body was still capable, he felt he was no longer contributing by winning games for his state in the longer format.

Henriques praised the younger generation of players and expressed confidence that they would lead NSW forward. He thanked his teammates for creating an environment where he enjoyed playing. Henriques concluded his first-class career with 6830 runs at an average of 34.84, including 13 centuries, and 127 wickets at 30.75. He made an impressive Test debut against India in Chennai in 2013, scoring 68 and an unbeaten 81 but struggled in his next three matches.

Henriques expressed his faith in Jack Edwards’ leadership, acknowledging his strong leadership skills at an early stage of his career. He also thanked Cricket NSW for their continuous support since he joined the organisation at 17. Henriques remains committed to giving his best in shorter formats and contributing to the game that has given him so much.

NSW coach Greg Shipperd praised Henriques’ contributions both on and off the field, describing him as a consummate professional whose influence has greatly benefited NSW cricket. Shipperd emphasized that Henriques still has a lot to offer in the shorter formats and expressed eagerness to continue working with him.
