Ravichandran Ashwin is set to make a highly anticipated return to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for IPL 2025. In the IPL 2025 mega auction on Sunday, November 24, CSK reacquired the legendary Indian off-spinner for INR 9.75 crore. Head coach Stephen Fleming described Ashwin’s return as a “homecoming,” highlighting the special connection between the player and the franchise.

Ashwin made his IPL debut with CSK in 2008, spending seven successful seasons with the team and playing alongside MS Dhoni. After his time at CSK, Ashwin moved to the Rising Pune Supergiants, followed by stints at Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals. Rajasthan Royals released him on October 31, 2024, before he made his way back to CSK.
Reflecting on his return to the franchise after 10 years, Ashwin expressed his gratitude in a video shared by CSK on social media. He credited his time with CSK for shaping his international career and thanked the management for bringing him back. Ashwin also shared his excitement about reuniting with MS Dhoni, who was a mentor during his previous spell with CSK, and playing under the leadership of new captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Ashwin is one of the IPL’s all-time leading wicket-takers, with 180 wickets to his name. Notably, he took 90 of those wickets during his seven-year tenure with CSK. Currently in Australia for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Ashwin continues to be a key figure in India’s bowling lineup. Recently, he took nine wickets in three home matches against New Zealand, further cementing his importance in the team.
