Shubman Gill, India’s young batting star, missed the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Perth due to a left thumb injury. He is now doubtful for the second Test, scheduled to start on December 6 at the Adelaide Oval. The Day-Night Test will be played with the pink ball, but Gill is certain to miss India’s practice game on November 30 as he continues his recovery, according to a Times of India report.

The injury occurred during an intra-squad game, where Gill suffered a blow to his thumb. Medical specialists recommended 10-14 days of rest for the batter. Despite the considerable gap between the first and second Tests, team management is reluctant to rush Gill back into action. They prioritize his full recovery over immediate availability.
Even if Gill is deemed fit for the second Test, his lack of match practice could be a concern. A source cited by TOI stated, “Gill needs rest for a couple of weeks and match practice before selection. His finger’s condition will determine his availability, but he must be fully ready to perform in a high-pressure game.”
India’s combination for the first Test saw KL Rahul opening in Rohit Sharma’s absence, with Devdutt Padikkal batting at No. 3. While Rahul excelled and contributed significantly to India’s win, Padikkal struggled to make an impact. With Rohit set to return for the second Test, Rahul could potentially move to No. 3 if Gill remains unavailable. This adjustment could provide a stable batting lineup as India seeks to extend their lead in the series.
Team management is expected to monitor Gill closely, ensuring he is fit and ready for the challenges ahead.
