In a dramatic turn of events during Sunday’s IPL match between the Chennai Super Kings and the Rajasthan Royals, Ravindra Jadeja found himself at the center of controversy after being dismissed for obstructing the field, becoming only the third batter in IPL history to face such a fate.
The dismissal occurred due to a miscommunication between Jadeja and his batting partner, Ruturaj Gaikwad. As Jadeja attempted a second run, Gaikwad hesitated, leaving Jadeja strand midway down the pitch.
Seizing the opportunity, the Rajasthan Royals executed a swift fielding maneuver. The throw from the third man reached wicket keeper Sanju Samson, who targeted the bowlers end. However, the ball struck Jadeja’s body.
The Royals lodged an appeal for obstructing the field, prompting the third umpire to review the incident from various angles. After careful consideration, the third umpire ruled Jadeja out, asserting that he deliberately obstructed the field by impeding the path of the throw, indicating he was aware of its trajectory.
Jadeja, visibly displeased with the decision, expressed his frustration as he made his way back to the pavilion after scoring 5 runs off 6 balls. He engaged in a brief exchange with the on field umpire, underscoring the contentious nature of the dismissal.
Jadeja’s dismissal joins a rare category in IPL history, with only Yusuf Pathan (2013) and Amit Mishra (2019) previously falling victim to obstruction of the field.
