Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium is officially ready to host international cricket, including the ICC Champions Trophy, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed on Thursday. The announcement follows weeks of speculation and leaked images suggesting the venue was in poor condition just a week ago.

The PCB announced that workers completed the renovation and upgrades at the iconic stadium in a record 117 days, meeting international standards. This confirmation puts to rest concerns about Pakistan’s preparedness for the Champions Trophy, which begins on February 19.
Gaddafi Stadium Gets a Major Upgrade
The revamped stadium now boasts an improved seating capacity, modern hospitality boxes, upgraded floodlights, electronic scoreboards, and cutting-edge LED towers. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed gratitude to those who worked tirelessly on the project despite skepticism.
“I am grateful to all those who put in day and night of work to get the stadium ready on time despite the apprehensions and criticism,” Naqvi said.
The venue had been behind schedule by at least five weeks, raising doubts about its readiness before the February 12 deadline. However, the PCB now assures that Gaddafi Stadium is fully equipped for top-tier international cricket.
New Security Measures in Place
To prevent pitch invasions, the PCB has introduced a deep moat around the stadium’s boundary. A recent video on social media showcased the new security feature.
Gaddafi Stadium will host at least four Champions Trophy matches, including a semifinal. If India does not reach the final, the venue will also stage the title clash.
Grand Inauguration Planned
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif will inaugurate the upgraded stadium on Friday, with live performances by Ali Zafar, Aima Baig, and Arif Lohar. The first official match at the revamped venue will take place on February 8, when Pakistan faces New Zealand in a tri-series opener also featuring South Africa.
