Cooper Connolly has been added to Australia’s Champions Trophy squad after Matt Short was ruled out due to a quad injury. Short sustained the injury against Afghanistan and wouldn’t have recovered in time for the semi-final against India.
Connolly, a 21-year-old left-hand batter and left-arm spinner, has been a traveling reserve and is available immediately. He has played just three ODIs but could be considered, especially since Australia lost Short’s offspin. If selectors prefer a like-for-like opening batter, Jake Fraser-McGurk is an option, though his ODI record is modest, with 98 runs at 14.00. Alternatively, they might adjust the bowling attack and include Tanveer Sangha for extra spin. Another option is moving a middle-order batter, like Josh Inglis, to open.
Australia confirmed India as their semi-final opponent after New Zealand lost the final group game. Both Australia and South Africa traveled to Dubai in advance, ensuring time for preparation. South Africa will now head back to Lahore for their semi-final against New Zealand.
Adam Zampa is expected to be crucial in Dubai, where spin played a big role in India’s recent win over New Zealand. India’s spinners bowled 37.3 overs, with Varun Chakravarthy claiming 5 for 42. Australia struggled against Sri Lanka’s spinners in Colombo before this tournament, and Dubai’s conditions might favor slower, lower wickets.
Zampa admitted he hasn’t been at his best, despite taking key wickets against England and Afghanistan. However, he remains confident in his ability to deliver in crucial moments. If Australia defeats India, they will return to Lahore for the final; otherwise, the title clash will take place in Dubai.
