Bailey Confirms Warner Won't Be Part of 2025 ODI Champions Trophy

The selectors will not consider David Warner for next year’s ODI Champions Trophy 2025, despite his expressed interest in playing after announcing his international retirement. David Warner, who had previously stated that last year’s ODI World Cup would be his final appearance in the format, hinted at a return in a social media post following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup, marking the end of his career for the Australia cricket team. However, George Bailey, Australia’s national selector, confirmed Warner’s full retirement and emphasized the importance of celebrating his career across all formats.

Bailey Confirms Warner Won't Be Part of 2025 ODI Champions Trophy

Bailey commended Warner’s incredible career, noting his significant contributions to Australian cricket and suggesting that Warner’s legacy will continue to grow over time. He also mentioned that while Warner’s statements may sometimes seem playful, the team is focusing on transitioning to new players across all three formats.

In addition to Warner’s retirement, Bailey discussed the selectors’ plans for other players in white-ball cricket. Although Matthew Wade seems to have played his last game for Australia, this has not been officially confirmed. The selectors have rested Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell from the upcoming T20I series, but their long-term futures in the format remain undecided. Bailey stressed that the selectors are excited about integrating new players, such as Cooper Connolly and Jake Fraser-McGurk, especially after the team’s disappointing exit in the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup in the West Indies.

Reflecting on the T20 World Cup, Bailey expressed frustration over Australia’s quick exit despite a strong start. He praised Mitchell Marsh‘s captaincy during the tournament and expressed confidence in his leadership for the upcoming tours of Scotland and England. Bailey emphasized the selectors’ focus on building a strong team for the future while acknowledging the valuable contributions of seasoned players like Starc and Maxwell.
