The Ghana Basketball Federation is setting high expectations for the future of 3×3 basketball in the country following its involvement in a strategic development initiative through the FIBA PLUS project.
The Federation, working closely with FIBA’s global headquarters in Switzerland and the FIBA Regional Office in Africa, has embraced expert guidance to formulate a comprehensive plan aimed at advancing the sport. As Ghana continues to grow in basketball, the country has begun implementing this 3×3 development project, positioning itself for tangible results.
The focus of the initiative has been on optimizing existing FIBA 3×3 tools, including efforts in key areas such as:
- Training referees and coaches specialized in 3×3 basketball.
- Increasing player participation by organizing more FIBA-endorsed 3×3 events.
- Securing greater private and public funding to support the promotion of 3×3 basketball.
- Preparing a team to participate in an international 3×3 event by 2025.
Ato Van-Ess, President of the Ghana Basketball Federation, expressed his enthusiasm for the progress and emphasized the value of FIBA’s support. He acknowledged the significance of the FIBA PLUS initiative in shaping a clear roadmap for 3×3 basketball development in Ghana.

“The steps we have taken so far in partnership with FIBA are a testament to our commitment to the growth of basketball in Ghana,” Van-Ess stated. “Our collaboration has been rooted in strategic planning, and we have defined clear objectives that will guide the successful implementation of this project.”
Van-Ess emphasized that the benefits of this project extend far beyond the game itself. “This initiative will not only increase the popularity of the fast-paced, dynamic 3×3 format but will also help cultivate and nurture local talent, create more opportunities for young athletes, and enhance our presence on the international stage,” he explained.
The Federation’s president also added that the initiative is not only creating a sustainable platform for basketball in Ghana, but it is also one that will attract significant investment and, moreover, inspire a new generation of players and fans.
The FIBA PLUS program helps national federations develop strategies to enhance their ability to organize, professionalize, and commercialize basketball activities. This initiative is a key part of FIBA’s broader goal of empowering national federations and advancing the sport globally.
As Ghana continues to implement its 3×3 development plan, the nation is well on its way to significantly transforming its basketball landscape, paving the way for a brighter future in the sport.
