The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) has unveiled the updated version of its 5×5 Official Wheelchair Basketball Rules (OWBR), which will come into effect on November 1, 2024. These revisions bring the OWBR in line with the latest updates to the FIBA Official Basketball Rules, ensuring uniformity across both versions of the sport.
One of the stand out changes in the updated OWBR is the removal of gender-specific language. In a bid to foster inclusivity, the OWBR and the Official Wheelchair Basketball Rules Interpretations (OWBRI) now use “they/their” instead of “he/she.” This shift reflects the IWBF’s commitment to making the game accessible and welcoming for all participants.
Another significant revision involves the handling of fouls. The authorities have removed the previous “throw-in” foul and its associated penalties. Instead, any contacts that would have fallen under this category will now be addressed through existing foul classifications, such as “personal fouls” (Article 34) and “unsportsmanlike fouls” (Article 37). This adjustment aims to streamline the rules and simplify the decision making process for referees, coaches, and players.
To aid in understanding the revisions, the new rulebook highlights all updates in blue, making it easier for players and officials to adapt to the changes.
The IWBF has expressed its gratitude to the Technical Commission for their hard work in refining the rules, ensuring that wheelchair basketball continues to evolve while staying aligned with international standards.
