FIBA Celebrates Inclusion of 3×3 Basketball and 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball in Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

FIBA has announced its excitement over the inclusion of both 3×3 basketball and 3×3 wheelchair basketball in the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. This decision marks a significant milestone for the sport, building on the success and enthusiasm generated during the Birmingham 2022 Games, where 3×3 basketball captivated audiences in the heart of Birmingham City Center.

Scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 2, 2026, the Glasgow Commonwealth Games will showcase a diverse program featuring 10 sports across four venues. The addition of 3×3 basketball underscores the growing global popularity of the sport, making it a significant part of the Commonwealth Games’ offerings.

FIBA recognizes the crucial role played by the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) in promoting and developing 3×3 wheelchair basketball worldwide. This collaboration gained attention recently at the FIBA 3×3 Europe Cup in Vienna, where FIBA 3×3 and IWBF hosted the inaugural integrated running and wheelchair basketball Europe Cup, signaling a new era for 3×3 basketball.

The inclusion of these formats in the Commonwealth Games not only reflects their rising popularity but also represents an important step toward greater inclusivity in sports, allowing a wider array of athletes to compete on an international stage. As anticipation builds for the 2026 Games.
