Deutsche Telekom Wins ‘Best Sports Broadcast’ Award for FIBA Basketball World Cup Coverage

MIES (Switzerland) – In a historic achievement, Deutsche Telekom, FIBA’s broadcasting partner in Germany, has been awarded the title of ‘Best Sports Broadcast’ at the prestigious German TV Awards. This accolade is in recognition of their exceptional coverage of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, presented through their MagentaTV and MagentaSport brands.

The 2023 edition of the FIBA Basketball World Cup was the most successful in history, taking place across three nations—Philippines, Indonesia, and Japan—for the first time. It achieved record-breaking milestones in attendance, digital engagement, and broadcast coverage, making it a standout event.

Germany celebrated one of its most memorable sporting moments during this tournament, with the national team, led by TISSOT MVP Denis Schroder, clinching the Naismith Trophy. They triumphed over Serbia with a score of 83-77 in a thrilling final held in Manila.

Throughout the tournament, broadcasters aired 92 live games across three channels, with viewership peaking at 2.8 million during the semi-final clash between Germany and the USA. In total, an impressive 10 million viewers tuned in to watch the tournament across Germany.

The quality of coverage provided by MagentaTV and MagentaSport left a lasting impression on the awards jury in Cologne. They acknowledged the outstanding programming and highlighted individual journalistic and artistic achievements that set this broadcast apart.
