Jannik Sinner Edges Out Daniil Medvedev in Epic U.S. Open Quarter-Final

Top seed Jannik Sinner advanced to the U.S. Open semi-finals with a dramatic 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Daniil Medvedev in a quarter-final clash on Wednesday.

The match, held at Arthur Ashe Stadium, saw Sinner emerge victorious despite a fierce comeback from Medvedev. Sinner had previously defeated Medvedev in the Australian Open final, and he once again left the Russian star disappointed in New York.

Medvedev, the 2021 U.S. Open champion, had previously bested Sinner in the Wimbledon quarter-finals but struggled to find his rhythm this time. His performance was marred by 57 unforced errors, which proved costly.

“It was very tough; we know each other quite well,” Sinner said after the match. “We knew it was going to be very physical.”

The Italian started strong, dominating the first set with precision and efficiency. He lost just one first-serve point, signaling his intent to dominate. However, Medvedev responded with renewed vigor in the second set, seizing a break with a stunning backhand winner and capitalizing on another break point in a prolonged rally.

The momentum shifted once again as Sinner regained control in the third set, winning the first five games and leaving commentators astonished.

The fourth set was a nail-biter, with the decisive moment arriving when Medvedev committed an unforced forehand error, giving Sinner a crucial break in the seventh game. Although Medvedev saved one match point and rallied the crowd for support, Sinner closed out the match swiftly in the next game.

Sinner’s victory ensures that the men’s singles at the U.S. Open will feature a new champion, as Medvedev was the only former winner to reach the quarter-finals in a tournament marked by surprising early exits.

Sinner’s next challenge will be against Britain’s Jack Draper, with a place in the final at stake.
