Jannik Sinner secured the US Open 2024 title with a commanding performance, defeating Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 on Sunday. The Italian marked his triumph with a jubilant celebration, raising his arms high and sharing the moment with the enthusiastic Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd.
Sinner’s victory was not without its challenges. Prior to the tournament, he was embroiled in a doping controversy after testing positive twice for an anabolic agent in March. However, an independent tribunal ruled that the positive tests were due to unintentional contamination, allowing him to avoid a ban.
Despite the turmoil, Sinner focused on his game and made history by becoming the first Italian man to win the US Open. In his post-match interview, he addressed the doping issue and dedicated his triumph to his ailing aunt.
“This title means so much to me; the last period of my career has been incredibly tough,” Sinner said. “My team has supported me every day, and the people close to me have been my strength.”
He continued, “I love tennis and practice hard for moments like these, but life exists beyond the court. I want to dedicate this victory to my aunt, who is not in good health. I don’t know how much longer I’ll have her in my life, so it’s wonderful to share this positive moment with her.”
Currently the world No. 1 in singles, Sinner has amassed 16 ATP singles titles, including two Grand Slam victories—his 2024 Australian Open and now the US Open. In addition to his Grand Slam successes, he finished as a runner-up at the ATP Finals and led Italy to the 2023 Davis Cup title.
Sinner’s journey to the 2024 Australian Open title saw him overcome Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals before staging a remarkable comeback to defeat Daniil Medvedev in a five-set thriller, clinching his first major title.
With this latest Grand Slam win, Sinner has solidified his status as one of the sport’s rising stars, demonstrating resilience both on and off the court.
