The US Open 2024 has reached its thrilling semi-final stage, marking the first time in 21 years that multiple American men and women have advanced this far in a Grand Slam tournament. Starting Thursday, September 5th, the top contenders will battle it out for a place in the finals.
Leading charge for United States is Jessica Pegula, who, at 30, is making her debut in a Grand Slam semi-final. Pegula achieved a remarkable victory over the No. 1 women’s seed, Iga Swiatek, in straight sets on Wednesday at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Pegula has been in exceptional form, winning 14 of her last 15 matches and not dropping a set throughout the tournament. Her semi-final opponent is unseeded Karolina Muchova from the Czech Republic, who has also not lost a set in the tournament.
The other American woman in the semi-finals, Emma Navarro, will face the No. 2 seed, Aryna Sabalenka, the reigning two-time Australian Open champion.
On the men’s side, Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe will compete against each other on Friday, September 6th. Fritz, the 12th seed, is making his first semi-final appearance at a Grand Slam and holds a 6-1 head-to-head advantage over his friend Tiafoe. The last American man to reach a major final was Andy Roddick, who lost to Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2009.
The top-seeded Jannik Sinner, who eliminated 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev in four sets on Wednesday, will face Jack Draper next. Draper, who has become the first British man to reach a US Open semi-final since Andy Murray’s 2012 title, will look to continue his impressive run.
The last time American men and women achieved this feat in a Grand Slam was in 2003, when Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi, Lindsay Davenport, and Jennifer Capriati all reached the semi-finals.
