Rafael Nadal has come to the defense of Jannik Sinner following recent doping allegations, asserting that the World No. 1’s positive test for a banned substance was unintentional and that he did not receive undue leniency due to his ranking.
In an interview with “El Hormiguero” on Monday, Nadal expressed his support for Sinner. Who recently faced scrutiny after testing positive for trace amounts of an anabolic steroid in March. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) concluded on August 20 that the positive test was a result of Sinner’s exposure to the substance through a massage administered by his physiotherapist, thus ruling out intentional doping and deciding against a suspension.
Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, stated his trust in the ITIA’s decision. “I trust that he wasn’t punished because those who judged this-case determined quite clearly that there was nothing to punish. I don’t believe the sentence has anything to do with him being No. 1 in the world,” Nadal said.
The controversy surrounding Sinner intensified when Novak Djokovic, who is currently participating in the US Open. Acknowledged that some players might view the ITIA’s decision as indicative of a double standard in tennis. Djokovic’s comments suggested that the handling of Sinner’s case could raise questions among his peers.
Despite these sentiments, Nadal remained firm in his belief in the integrity of the decision-making process. “I believe in someone’s good faith. I know Sinner; I don’t believe that Sinner wanted to dope. In the end, justice is justice, and I believe in justice,” Nadal added. “I believe in bodies that have to make decisions and that they do it based on what-they believe is right.”
Amidst the controversy, Sinner has continued to shine on the court. He advanced to the quarter-finals of the US Open for the second time after defeating 14th seed Tommy Paul with scores of 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/5), 6-1.
