Carlos Alcaraz Battles Through Qualifier Challenge to Advance in US Open

Carlos Alcaraz faced a challenging test from Australian qualifier Li Tu in the first round of the US Open on Tuesday but ultimately secured a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory.

The four-time Grand Slam champion, who lost to Novak Djokovic in the Paris Olympics final. Began the match strongly but faltered as errors crept into his game, allowing Tu to snatch the second set.

Despite the setback, Alcaraz regained his composure and turned the match around in the third set. He broke Tu’s serve to take a 4-3 lead and never relinquished control, eventually sealing win with his eighth ace. Alcaraz will now face Dutch player Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round.

Li Tu, an Adelaide native, made headlines by qualifying for his first appearance on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Tu had previously stepped away from tennis for six years to pursue a degree and establish a tennis academy. His journey back to the sport culminated in a notable performance against the third seed.

In an on-court interview with ESPN analyst Nick Kyrgios, Alcaraz acknowledged Tu’s impressive play. “He surprised me a little bit,” Alcaraz admitted. “He started the match a bit nervous, but after the first set, he began to play great tennis. I’ll be following his results closely; I’m sure we’ll see more of him in the future.”

Alcaraz easily won the first set, but Tu’s resilience was evident as he came back in the second. Tu delivered a stunning passing shot and broke Alcaraz’s serve with a precise one-handed backhand down the line, leveling the match and energizing the crowd.

The sweltering conditions in the third set eventually took their toll on Tu, allowing Alcaraz to use his power and stamina to finish strongly. The Spaniard thanked the fans for their “electric” support, describing the atmosphere at Arthur Ashe Stadium as one of the most thrilling he has experienced.

Having triumphed at the French Open in June and Wimbledon a month later, Alcaraz is now aiming to build on his success at the US Open. Despite a recent disappointment at the Paris Games and a surprising defeat by Gael Monfils at the Cincinnati Open. The 21-year-old showed no signs of being hindered by a right ankle injury sustained in practice last Saturday.
