Top-seeded Italian Jannik Sinner overcame a rocky start and the shadow of a doping scandal to secure his place in the second round of the US Open with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 victory over American Mackenzie McDonald on Tuesday.
Sinner’s participation in the year’s final Grand Slam has been marred by controversy following recent revelations from the International Tennis Integrity Agency. The agency reported that Sinner tested positive twice for an anabolic agent in March. Despite his strong denial of any wrongdoing, the Australian Open champion has faced significant scrutiny in New York.
The match began with Sinner struggling to find his rhythm, leading to several unforced errors that allowed McDonald to seize an early advantage. McDonald capitalized on Sinner’s mistakes to win the first set decisively.
In second set, McDonald broke early to lead 1-0, but Sinner responded after saving three breakpoints in a tense game. The critical break seemed to rejuvenate the world number one, as he swiftly gained momentum to take a 4-1 lead. He consolidated his advantage, breaking McDonald’s serve once more to level the match at one set apiece.
From that point on, Sinner’s performance improved markedly. He won five consecutive games to clinch the third set and started the fourth set with a commanding 3-0 lead. Despite McDonald managing to win a couple of games late in the fourth set, Sinner maintained his composure and served out the match with authority.
Reflecting on his performance, Sinner acknowledged the challenging start but expressed relief at advancing. “It didn’t begin well, but first matches in any tournament are always tough,” he said in his on-court interview. “McDonald played really well initially, but I managed to find my rhythm and keep pushing. I’m very happy to be through to the next round.”
Sinner’s victory was his first on Arthur Ashe Stadium, a significant achievement following previous disappointments, including a five-set loss to Alexander Zverev in last year’s fourth round.
“This win means a lot to me,” Sinner added. “The support from the fans has been incredible. Thank you to everyone who came and stayed. Now, I’ll focus on the next round.”
In the second round, the 23-year-old will face another American, Alex Michelsen.
