Andy Murray to Join Novak Djokovic’s Coaching Team for Australian Open

Andy Murray, the three-time Grand Slam champion from Britain, will join Novak Djokovic’s coaching team ahead of the 2024 Australian Open. The 37-year-old, who retired from competitive tennis in August after a celebrated 19-year career, expressed excitement at the opportunity to work alongside the Serbian great in a coaching capacity.

Murray, who has long shared a fierce rivalry with Djokovic, will work with the 24-time Grand Slam champion in the off-season and during the lead-up to the Australian Open, which runs from January 12-26. This marks Murray’s first role as a coach since stepping away from the sport.

The collaboration between the two longtime rivals is sure to be an intriguing one. Djokovic, who has won a record 10 Australian Open titles, shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) teasing the new partnership, joking: “He never liked retirement anyway.” He went on to reflect on their long history, saying: “We played each other since we were boys, 25 years of being rivals, pushing each other beyond our limits. I thought our story may be over, but it turns out it has one final chapter. It’s time for one of my toughest opponents to step into my corner.”

Murray and Djokovic, who were born just weeks apart and grew up as junior rivals, have had a long-standing friendship throughout their careers. The pair have faced off in numerous memorable battles, with Djokovic leading their head-to-head 25-11. Notably, Murray defeated Djokovic in the 2012 US Open final and in the 2013 Wimbledon final, while Djokovic triumphed over Murray in four Australian Open finals.

The new role comes at an important time for Djokovic, who is seeking to bounce back from a relatively tough 2024 season. The Serb, despite winning a long-awaited Olympic gold medal in Paris, did not claim any Grand Slam titles, suffering early exits in both the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Djokovic, who parted ways with long-time coach Goran Ivanisevic earlier this year, has been making adjustments to his team in preparation for the 2024 season.

“I’m really excited for it and looking forward to spending time on the same side of the net as Novak for a change, helping him achieve his goals,” Murray said, confirming his involvement in Djokovic’s preparations for Melbourne.

Djokovic, reflecting on the new chapter with Murray, added: “I look forward to starting the season with Andy and having him by my side in Melbourne, where we’ve shared many exceptional moments throughout our careers.”

The 2024 Australian Open marks a crucial tournament for Djokovic, as he looks to further solidify his place in tennis history and perhaps surpass Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles. With Murray now part of his coaching team, Djokovic will hope that the collaboration will provide the edge he needs to reclaim the first Grand Slam of the season.
