Italy’s women’s volleyball team achieved a historic milestone by winning their first-ever Olympic gold medal at the Paris 2024 Games. On Sunday, 11 August, Italy defeated the reigning champions, USA, in straight sets to claim the top prize.
The Italian squad, making their debut in an Olympic final, dominated the match with set scores of 25-18, 25-20, and 25-17, preventing the USA from defending their title. This victory marked a stunning ascent for Italy, whose previous best Olympic finish was fifth place.
Throughout the tournament, Italy showcased exceptional performance, winning 17 consecutive sets after a narrow loss in their opening game against the Dominican Republic. Monica de Gennaro, a 37-year-old veteran and four-time Olympian, expressed her elation: “It feels special. It’s the dream of every player to play in the final of the Olympics and win it.”
Her teammate, Alessia Orro, highlighted the immense effort leading to their triumph: “It means everything. Behind there’s a lot of hard work, sweat, sacrifices, and disappointments that have brought us this far.”
For the United States, the silver medal represented a bittersweet outcome. Jordyn Poulter, a member of the gold medal team in Tokyo, acknowledged the challenge: “It is bittersweet, but mostly sweet. Italy played an incredible match. They are a great team, and I’m proud to share the floor with them.”
Brazil completed the podium by securing bronze with a 3-1 victory over Türkiye in the bronze medal match on Saturday.
