The team, comprising Adam Peaty, Matt Richards, James Guy, Tom Dean, and Duncan Scott, triumphed at La Defense Arena, repeating their Tokyo success. This victory marked the first time a British relay team has defended an Olympic title in swimming or athletics.
The quartet’s commanding performance saw them secure the win by a comfortable 1.35 seconds. Duncan Scott, who had narrowly missed out in the individual event the previous day, anchored the team to victory. The win came after a series of near misses, including silver medals for Peaty and Richards earlier in the Games.
The triumph was a significant moment for Team GB 4x200m relay victory, which celebrated its fourth gold of the Games and a total of 12 medals. The squad also received support from Kieran Bird, Jack McMillan, and others who contributed in the heats.
In a remarkable display of British swimming team achievements 2024, each member of the winning team has previously secured world or Olympic gold in the 200m freestyle. The camaraderie among the team was evident as they celebrated with their families in the stands, a luxury they missed during the COVID-affected Tokyo Games.
