Daniel Wiffen may have had a fleeting role in the iconic “red wedding” scene from Game of Thrones over a decade ago, but his performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Tuesday, July 30, was nothing short of legendary.
The 23-year-old Irish swimmer made history by winning the gold medal in the men’s 800m freestyle, marking Ireland’s first-ever gold in male swimming. Wiffen’s triumphant swim, clocking in at an Olympic record time of 7:38.19, saw him touch the wall just ahead of a highly competitive field of Olympic and world medallists.
As his name lit up at the top of the leaderboard, Wiffen spread his arms in a gesture of triumph, signaling that the former extra had now become the hero.
“It’s just so incredible to say that I’ve achieved the best result you can in swimming, that Olympic gold,” Wiffen said post-race.
“My goal was to progress, progress, progress until I hit Olympic champion, and I’m happy to say I’ve had a very good upslope in terms of swimming. We went from 14th place in the last Olympics, making a world championships final, making a Commonwealth medal, fourth at a world championships, triple European champion, world record, double world champion and now Olympic champion. I won it all.”
Tuesday’s victory was the pinnacle of Wiffen’s career thus far. As he stood atop the podium, tears welled up behind his glasses while the Irish national anthem played in the Paris La Defense Arena.
“It means everything. The whole country is behind me tonight,” Wiffen reflected.
“I don’t normally cry. I was hoping no one would get to see that. It’s a special moment. I dreamed of this every day of my life. I’ve never heard that national anthem at the Olympics before, and it’s crazy to say that it was me standing on that podium.”
Wiffen’s journey from a child actor to an Olympic champion is a testament to his dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence. His historic win not only places him among Ireland’s sporting greats but also inspires a new generation of swimmers back home.
