In a thrilling final at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday, China’s top-ranked table tennis duo, Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha, clinched the gold medal in mixed doubles. As a result, they completed their collection of major titles. The pair, cheered on by a lively crowd of mostly Chinese fans, won the gold with a 4-2 victory over Ri Jong Sik and Kim Kum Yong from North Korea.

This win marks a significant achievement for Wang and Sun, who had already triumphed in the mixed doubles at the World Championships in 2021 and 2023. The Olympic gold is particularly sweet for them because China missed out in Tokyo 2021, where Japan’s Jun Mizutani and Mima Ito claimed the mixed doubles gold.
Wang, a six-time world champion, expressed immense satisfaction with their victory, saying, “This mixed doubles gold is probably the medal I wanted the most.” It feels like all the hard work has paid off. This is not just our glory; it belongs to the entire team.”
Sun praised their teamwork and long-standing partnership, noting, “We’ve known each other since childhood and have worked hard together. “We’re thrilled with this result and aim to keep our success going.”
With this victory, Team China now aims for a clean sweep of all five table tennis titles at the Paris Games. Wang felt a sense of relief and, consequently, remains optimistic about their chances in the remaining events. He stated, “This win has lifted a weight off our shoulders. Consequently, we’re looking forward to building on this success in the upcoming competitions.”
