With Jorge Martin officially announced to replace the soon-to-retire Aleix Espargaro at Aprilia, the focus now shifts to the remaining factory seat and Maverick Vinales’ future. Vinales, Espargaro’s teammate since mid-2021, has had an impressive season, currently standing as the top RS-GP rider in sixth place. His first Grand Prix win earlier this season for Aprilia has further solidified his standing.
Massimo Rivola, CEO of Aprilia Racing, has made it clear that retaining Vinales for the post-Espargaro era is a primary goal. Despite earlier speculation about seeking an Italian rider, Rivola emphasized the importance of Vinales’ decision. “I think the priority is to understand what Maverick wants to do. And then if Maverick wants to stay, I’m the happiest person,” Rivola stated. He added that if Vinales stays, he would naturally assume the role of the new team ‘Captain.’
Vinales has been non-committal about his 2025 intentions but has expressed that his decision will be based on “pure performance.” Despite his current focus on delivering a strong season for Aprilia, Vinales is keeping his options open. “I will do what is the best for my career,” he said. Indicating that his commitment to Aprilia is strong for now, but he is still evaluating his future.
The potential alternatives for Vinales include staying with Aprilia, moving to a satellite Ducati team, or considering a satellite KTM ride. His decision is crucial for Aprilia, who have put their search for an Italian star on hold pending his choice. “If Maverick won’t be with us – I have to consider also this option – [then] I see many Italian riders very, very strong. But our first priority is not this one,” Rivola explained.
Espargaro, who is likely to transition to a test rider role for Honda in 2025, has played a significant part in Aprilia’s journey. Vinales acknowledged Espargaro’s contribution and the weight of his role at Aprilia, stating, “Aleix has been many years with Aprilia, I think he carries a lot of weight on his shoulders and did a really good job.”
Rivola humorously suggested offering Espargaro, who played a key role in promoting Aprilia to Vinales and Martin, an assistant role. “For sure he presented Aprilia well [to Vinales and Martin]. It’s how Aleix is, just natural in saying the good things and the bad things,” Rivola noted. He highlighted Aprilia’s consistent growth and race wins this year as significant factors in Martin’s decision to join.
In conclusion, Rivola remains optimistic and enthusiastic about the prospect of Vinales staying with Aprilia. Which would provide stability and continuity for the team as they navigate the transition into the post-Espargaro era.
