Lewis Hamilton has addressed rumors about his potential acquisition of the Gresini MotoGP team, setting the record straight at the British Grand Prix.
Reports from The Race suggested that Hamilton was “in talks” to buy the team from its current owner, Nadia Padovani. However, the Formula 1 icon provided his perspective when questioned at Silverstone.
“I’ve always loved MotoGP,” Hamilton stated, with Crash.net present in the paddock. “I am interested in the potential growth of the sport. But I haven’t looked that far into it yet. But anything is possible. Equity definitely interests me.”
Hamilton elaborated on his aspirations, mentioning, “The Broncos was the first step into team ownership. Over the next five to 10 years there will, hopefully, be more. We’ll see where…”
In 2022, Hamilton became part of the ownership group for the NFL’s Denver Broncos.
Nadia, the wife of the late Fausto Gresini, a two-time 125cc champion, now manages the Gresini MotoGP team, which he founded in 1997. The team has seen recent successes, including victories by Enea Bastianini in 2022 and Fabio di Giannantonio in 2023, and has made headlines with the signing of Marc Marquez. Although Marquez will join the factory Ducati team next year, Gresini is poised to improve its status within the manufacturer following Pramac’s exit.
Hamilton’s passion for motorcycles is well-known. His notable track day with Valentino Rossi, where Hamilton rode a bike and Rossi drove a car, underscored this enthusiasm. Reflecting on his early desires, Hamilton said, “I have always loved bikes. When I was younger, my ambition was to race bikes, not cars. But my dad wouldn’t let me race bikes – he said they were too dangerous! He got me into four wheels rather than two. It was the right choice because if I was racing during the time Vale was there, I wouldn’t have been so successful!”
Despite focusing on Formula 1, Hamilton continues to indulge in his love for motorcycles. “Since I have been in Formula 1, I have a super-bike and I like to do some track days. It is fascinating. It gives a different perspective.”
Hamilton’s comments suggest that while he has a deep-seated interest in MotoGP and its growth potential, any concrete steps towards owning a team like Gresini are not yet on the immediate horizon.
