Bob Bell, a longstanding figure at the Enstone-based Alpine F1 Team, has officially left his advisory position with the team. Bell’s association with the team dates back to 1997, spanning multiple eras from Benetton to Renault.
Having transitioned to an advisory role in 2018, Bell had reduced his involvement in F1 activities to explore opportunities with Alpine Labs, an organization focusing on the application of racing technology in diverse fields. Despite his diminished role, Bell remained a revered figure within the team, serving as a link to its illustrious past.
Bell’s departure marks the end of an era for the Enstone outfit, as he played a pivotal role in its evolution over the years. His daughter Katy also contributes to the team’s endeavors as an electronics systems engineer, further cementing the Bell family’s connection to Alpine.
Beginning his career as an aerodynamicist at McLaren in the 1980s, Bob Bell’s expertise contributed to the success of the legendary MP4/4 during the Ayrton Senna era. Subsequently joining Benetton in 1997, Bell’s journey included a stint at Jordan before returning to Enstone with Renault in 2001.

During his tenure, Bell served as technical director during Fernando Alonso’s championship-winning campaigns in 2005 and 2006. He briefly assumed the role of team principal in 2009 following the ‘crashgate’ scandal before transitioning to managing director in 2010.
Bell’s departure coincides with a series of changes within the Alpine team. Last summer saw significant personnel changes, including the departure of team principal Otmar Szafnauer and veteran sporting director Alan Permane. Additionally, chief technical officer Pat Fry left the team to join Williams.
Recent resignations by technical director Matt Harman and head of aerodynamics Dirk de Beer further underscore the team’s restructuring efforts. Alpine announced a revamped leadership structure, appointing Joe Burnell as technical director (engineering), David Wheater as technical director (aerodynamics), and promoting Ciaron Pilbeam to technical director (performance).
Bell’s departure marks the end of an era at Alpine, signaling a new chapter as the team navigates through a period of transition and restructuring.
