Norris Defends McLaren’s Bold Strategy Move Despite Saudi Arabian GP Outcome

During a safety car period triggered by Lance Stroll’s crash, Norris, along with Lewis Hamilton, Nico Hulkenberg, and Zhou Guanyu, chose not to pit, aiming to gain track position. This decision elevated Norris to the lead temporarily, but he eventually finished eighth, after making an earlier pit stop than planned to cover Hamilton’s late tyre change.

Reflecting on the strategy, Norris acknowledged the risk but defended the team’s decision to try something different. He emphasized the importance of being more aggressive and appreciated McLaren’s attempt to break away from conventional approaches.

While admitting that the outcome wasn’t optimal, Lando Norris maintained his satisfaction with the team’s attempt to execute a unique strategy, despite hindsight suggesting otherwise.

Regarding his tyre choice after Hamilton’s stop, Norris explained that he had to switch to soft tyres to counter Hamilton’s threat. Although he believed he could have gone to the chequered flag on medium tyres, covering Hamilton’s strategy led to the tyre change, which affected his final race position.

Despite the strategy not yielding the desired result, Norris praised Ferrari rookie Oliver Bearman’s performance and acknowledged the challenge posed by the Ferrari car.

Moreover, Norris narrowly avoided a penalty for moving before the race start, an incident not detected by the FIA’s transponder system.

In conclusion, while McLaren’s strategy didn’t deliver the expected outcome, Norris stood by the team’s bold decision-making process and remained optimistic about future races.
